Can Shakshuka be used as a pie filling?

Absolutely! And here’s why it’s a great idea:

  • Bold, complex flavour — the spiced tomato and pepper base brings far more depth than a standard quiche filling
  • Visually stunning — the egg yolks set into the filling create a striking cross-section when sliced
  • Crowd differentiator — nobody else is bringing this to the potluck
  • Naturally gluten-free filling — easy to adapt for dietary needs
  • Feta, za’atar, or harissa can be layered in to push it even further
Can shakshuka be used as a pizza sauce?
Yes — treat it as a spiced tomato-pepper reduction in place of standard passata. The sauce needs to be cooked down well so it doesn’t make the dough soggy. For the eggs, you have three options:

Crack eggs on top before the final few minutes of baking — yolks still runny, whites just set
Use the sauce only as the base, then finish with feta, olives and za’atar after baking
Scramble the eggs into the sauce during reduction so they become part of the base itself

The result sits closer to a Turkish pide than a traditional pizza — which is no bad thing.
